What Not to Do When Preparing for Dental Procedures

When preparing for any kind of surgery, there are certain things you should and shouldn’t do. This also applies to dental surgery.  These dos and don'ts are essential for the success of your procedure. Your dentist will tell you what to do and what not to do before a procedure.

Below are the things you shouldn’t do before dental surgery:

1.Eating, drinking and smoking

It’s best not to drink anything, even water or eat, eight to 12 hours before the surgery. Depending on the anaesthetic used, your dentist will advise you to have a light meal a few hours before the procedure.

You also cannot smoke for at least 12 hours before the procedure.

2.Contact lenses/makeup

Do not wear contact lenses as your eyes will close for a long time when you are under general anaesthesia. Do not wear make-up, lipstick, cologne or body spray. Do not wear jewellery too.

There are also things you can do when preparing for dental surgery:

1.Secure a ride

Ensure you have secured a ride after the surgery. Don't attempt to drive yourself. The sedative you are under is dangerous and might cause an accident. Instead, reserve a cab or request a friend or family member to safely get to and from the procedure. If they are not available, you can ask your dentist to allow you to stay in their office for a few hours before you recover.

2.Your diet

Plan your post-procedure diet. The immediate diet should compose of soft food that requires little chewing or no chewing at all. Don't take spicy foods or acidic ones. Ensure you have sufficient sources of nutrients in your diet to help with recovery.
